Question 3
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Twentieth century music is an epoch that is difficult to define in terms of musical style. This time period mothered many new terms for musical styles because of the variety of music that was being written. Traditional forms and structures were altered by the twentieth century musicians and composers and reinvented using non-Western musical methods and conceptual ideas. Technology became an exceedingly significant aspect in the making of music. Electronically created sounds are used in combination with other electronic sounds or played together with conventional music devices. Of late, the application of computer technology has changed the way in which modern music is composed.
We can observe that the modern music encompass various trends which can be broadly classified in the following way.
Impressionism was of primary significance since it diverged from Romanticism and moved towards modern characteristics. Though this type of music was systematic, it still started the departure from the Romantic era. Impressionistic music was imprecise in structure, delicate in character, and had a mystifying ambience to it. Although not as significant as Impressionism, Expressionism was a major early twentieth century trend. Stylistically, expressionistic music avoided tonality to create dissonance. It was emotional and had a rather a Romantic feel to it.
Neo-Classicism can be regarded as the new classical trend which commenced its course in the early 1920s and continued as the foremost musical movement throughout the century and this is even now very popular. Neo-Classicism integrated the music of the Classical era, with regard to simplicity of feel and detachment. This style was based on the Classical era, yet it also blended Renaissance, Baroque, and some modern trends with it.
The musical style Jazz was the predominant music style of the 1900s. Jazz is mainly an American form and stays popular even today. Jazz can be considered as anything from popular music of the twentieth century to the improvised sounds of a dance group. Some major forms of Jazz have been Ragtime, Blues, Swing, Dixieland Jazz, Bop, and Boogie-Woogie. The later part of the 1900s, we can observe the emergence of new forms and techniques of Jazz which embrace cool jazz, progressive jazz, and rock and roll. In general these current styles have a greater variety in harmony, rhythm, and melody, and are less akin to dance music. They also occasionally use techniques and forms from classical music, and vice versa, as modern classical music often comprises Jazz characteristics.
Aleatory music is an extremely random style of music. The composer or the artist will arbitrarily choose musical elements and mix them into a piece of music. As this style music has no rules, any variety of music can be fashioned as a consequence. After the composer writes a piece in this atypical style, the artist then improvises on it, to make it more alien and unique. A few methods concerned with this form of unpredictable and arbitrary music are making the audience improvise along with the artist, using electronic or computer media, or reading poetry somewhere inside of the work.
The latest trend of the twentieth century dwells in electronic music. Electronic music takes electronically created sounds and transform them into a work of music. Like traditional music, electronic music has four common properties, such as amplitude, pitch, duration, and timbre. Electronic music is characteristically composed on either a synthesizer or a computer. The most modern trends in this type of music display electronic music in combination with Jazz.
